DEPARTMENT OF INFORMATICS

Ion COVALENCO
Head of the Department

The major responsibilities of the Department of Informatics are to provide training, set up and implement management information systems for various AESM subdivisions as well as maintain computer networking systems. The Department includes 5 laboratories with 48 computer support specialists that operate computers and accessory equipment to ensure an efficiently functioning computer and networking environment.

AESM has built a powerful information system that includes a total of 11000 computers installed in 28 classrooms, the Multimedia Center, the Scientific Library, 3 teaching staff rooms and student dormitories. The computer classrooms run 2 shifts.

All AESM subdivisions - deans’ offices, chairs, departments, offices and services - are equipped with the latest computer technologies.

Computers are monitored by 11 servers, 28 hubs and approximately 15000 meters of cable that provide network links. There are 15 Multimedia slide projectors and 20 notebooks used in class and research activities.

The AESM administration is increasingly aware of the importance of updated computer technology. Thus, during 2004-2005 a continuous process of updating computers in the classrooms and other AESM subdivisions has been carried out. Standard monitors with electronic tubes have been replaced with flat-panel liquid-crystal display monitors.

Internet links have been provided to junior academic staff and student dormitories.

Creating the AESM Web page

A number of computers have been installed for prompt e-mail access in the hallway of the building “A”.

The establishment and official inauguration of the Multimedia Centre has, undoubtedly, a major importance, as it is a European Standard Complex, the only one of its kind in Moldova, which was confirmed by numerous guests who visited our institution.

In October 2004, AESM hosted the 4th NATO Scientific Committee Conference on network management issues in education and research which has been attended by professionals from over 30 countries worldwide. The conference participants were pleasantly surprised by a highly developed AESM infrastructure, efficient organization and excellent conditions they have been provided with. The Department of Informatics contributed considerably to the organization and successful development of this international forum.

AESM has recently implemented the 1st Interacademic project which provides wireless Internet access.

The Department staff deliver lectures, participate in different international and national conferences, and have published 7 books and over 50 scientific articles.

Another activity undertaken by the Department of Informatics is to elaborate and implement information management systems for different AESM subdivisions, particularly for such offices as “Undergraduate Studies”, “Planning, Compensation and Personnel” and “Accounting”.
