The purpose of university military training is to prepare students to render needed service to their society and country in the event of a national security emergency and fill vacant positions within the armed forces reserve.

Enrollment is voluntary for AESM full-time and extra-mural students (women inclusively) as well as students and graduates of other higher education institutions. Training is provided on a fee basis.

Upon completion of the course that includes 12 compulsory disciplines, the students must pass two tests (General Military Regulations, Front Sight Training) and two examinations (Firearms Training and General Tactics) and have to swear the military oath in one of the National Army units. The results obtained determine consequently the military ranks granted.
